Categories
Use categories to organize subscriptions; read this page to add or reorder categories and understand domain masking.
Every subscription belongs to one category. Categories decide grouping and color in the subscription list, in Where the money goes in Reports, and in the breakdown on the public page.
- Open Settings → Categories → Manage categories.
- Click New category, enter a name, choose an icon and color, and save.
- Drag categories to set their order, then select the new category in a subscription’s editor.
Built-in categories
Section titled “Built-in categories”A new ledger comes with 20 categories, in this order: AI, Tools, Productivity, Video, Music, Games, Cloud & Servers, Storage, Domains, VPN & Network, Developer, Design, Education, News & Reading, Social, Shopping, Finance, Health & Fitness, Phone & Mobile, Lifestyle.
Default categories in a new ledger use the interface language. Names already used by subscriptions and custom category names are preserved; changing the language does not translate them automatically.
Managing categories
Section titled “Managing categories”Under Settings → Categories → Manage categories:
- New category: a name (up to 40 characters, unique), a color and an icon. Search the icon library or use any emoji.
- Edit: renaming a category updates every subscription in it.
- Reorder: drag to reorder. Lists, filters and reports follow this order.
- Delete: if subscriptions still use it, pick a category to move them to.
You can also choose New category… right in the editor. When CSV import or MCP writes a category name that isn’t in the list, it’s added to the end automatically.
The Domains category
Section titled “The Domains category”The built-in Domains category is special: subscriptions in it — or whose tags or notes mention a domain, or whose name looks like a domain — are masked on the public page. Only the first letter and the top-level domain are kept, as in e••••••.com, and the URL and icon aren’t sent.
For a domain that’s live and fine to show, turn on Show domain on public page in the editor and visitors will see it in full.
Built-in categories are still recognized after you rename them: rename Domains to anything you like and masking keeps working.
Phone & Mobile
Section titled “Phone & Mobile”In the Phone & Mobile category, the editor’s Account field becomes Phone number, for keeping track of SIM cards.
